We all possess two levels of consciousness. We have the conscious part, which is responsible for making decisions, thinking and how we behave and in contrast, we have the subconscious part which is our feelings, emotions, instincts and habits.
Hypnosis is the act of ‘speaking’ to the subconscious to change deep seated habits and behaviours in order to improve our quality of life, both physically, mentally and emotionally. Hypnosis happens when a person is in a deepened relaxation, where the subconscious part of the mind is in a state of heightened awareness, which is highly susceptible to suggestions and imagery.

“And relax…” Hypnosis is accessed a form of relaxation, but it is not sleep. You will not fall asleep in your session. In essence, bringing a client into hypnosis can behave much like a guided meditation, to induce a calmness and relaxed state that will enable the hypnotherapist to speak to your subconscious on a level where you are still in control, yet receptive to positive suggestion. You will be aware of what is happening and what is going on around you. During hypnosis, the hypnotherapist will use various techniques, tailored to the individual’s desired outcome.
Hypnosis could not be more different from the kind you see on stage or in the street for entertainment purposes.
Almost everyone can be hypnotised. In fact, you are frequently in a state of self-hypnosis. For example, have you ever driven a familiar stretch of road only to reach your destination, unable to recall going through a certain area? Yet you know you went through the area? You weren’t asleep but we often refer to situations such as this, as being in ‘auto pilot’. In these moments, you are relaxed, familiar and in a trance like state, you are in self-hypnosis. For those of you who don’t drive, perhaps you have been making a cup of tea or coffee, and not remembered if you have put sugar in. Or left the house, not remembering if you locked the door or turned off the tv, only to go back and check to find that you did, in fact, do those things in ‘auto pilot’.

Although hypnosis has a very high success rate (of around 93%), it is important to realise that it isn’t a one size fits all therapy. Much depends on the professional relationship between client and therapist, trust and openness and of course, the clients’ desire to change.
I will explain the process I intend to take you through prior to any hypnosis taking place. At the end of your session, you will gently come out of the relaxation and be back to being fully alert in just a few moments. Most clients will feel positive, refreshed and revived.
How many sessions will be needed, will depend on the focus, and the complexity of it. This will be indicated during the consultation process and agreed before beginning therapy.

Hypnosis for children follows a similar framework, however they may find their deeply relaxed state by becoming absorbed in an activity such as colouring just as easily as they would if they were sat quietly in a chair or laying on a couch. Children are usually great subjects for hypnosis as they have incredible imaginations. I work with children from the age of 10.
